Ebola and Nano Silver Controversy

It is very interesting to see how the FDA released a statement warning consumers about fradulent Ebola treatment products a few days ago, August 14th, 2014, right after the announcement "Nigerian Patients to Be Given Experimental Drug".

They said "Although there are experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments under development, these investigational products are in the early stages of product development, have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness, and the supply is very limited".

The experimental drug was none other than Nano Silver. Nigeria's Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the experimental drug came from a Nigerian scientist, whose name he would not disclose and that the drug was aimed to treat eight Nigerians who were infected.

The reason why they were ready to use an experimental drug was because the World Health Organization gave the green light in response to the outbreak in West Africa.

It is worth noting that a Nigerian contagious-disease expert, Doctor Simon Agwale, said Nano Silver had proven effective against viruses, bacteria and parasites and "it may be also a source of a cure".

Also, it is well known that silver in its colloidal state (cat-ions or charged nanoparticles of silver which measure between 5nm and 100nm), is germicidal against bacteria and viruses. (See our Research page for more info)

So why did the FDA intervene?

It is because "By law, dietary supplements cannot claim to prevent or cure disease".

By now you are probably thinking, "what about making a drug that uses colloidal silver?" The problem is that most manufacturers of colloidal silver each make their own however they want, without any restrictions as to what colloidal silver is and is not because the FDA won't regulate it.

As we mention in our Characteristics page, colloidal silver is not any kind of silver nanoparticles in water, colloidal silver has certain distinct characteristics.

We do not discredit the Doctor, Simon Agwale, for his noble intentions. However, we must not let ourselves be confused by these companies who make their own version of "colloidal silver", making all sorts of health claims (most of which are not correct or misleading), and believe that what they had was the answer to the Ebola problem.

Why do we say this?

As you can read and see from our website, colloidal silver must have certain characteristics in order to be colloidal. (Unfortunately the FDA does not care and it probably has something to do with the fact that colloidal silver when properly manufactured, is the same as what the big Pharmaceutical laboratories call nanoparticles of silver, put 2 and 2 together here).

So, where are we going with this?

Well, lets be clear here. We do not support the FDA for stepping in into something which has the potential to be the answer to the Ebola problem (maybe other problems too), but neither do we support that many companies manufacture a product which is less desireable, which is not what they say it is, and promote it by calling it Colloidal Silver (which is a product that actually worked in the past).

If all manufacturers of the so called Colloidal Silver would to get together and actually regulate what Colloidal Silver is and how it should be, that would be a start. From there, they could do other things such as promote research and maybe even apply to the GrandFather rule to their regulated colloidal silver. (We'll have to mention this in another post)

We hope that you, our reader, can see the importance in regulating this amazing product. It has so much potential, no wonder many laboratories are constantly studying it and nanoparticles of silver have found their way in many products we use in our daily lives.
