An Emerging Threat: Worldwide Antimicrobial Resistance

Why is antimicrobial resistance a worldwide threat?

On their 2014 Antimicrobial Resistance Global Report on Surveillance, the World Health Organization said “Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within a wide range of infectious agents is a growing public health threat of broad concern to countries and multiple sectors...A post-antibiotic era-in which common infections and minor injuries can kill-far from being an apocalyptic fantasy, is instead a very real possibility for the 21st century.

What is the focus of this report?

The report focuses on antibacterial resistance (ABR) in common bacterial pathogens. ABR is complex and multidimensional, involving a wide range of bacterial resistance mechanisms from many bacterias, which can cause a wide spectrum of diseases in humans and animals.

One of the key findings and public health implications of ABR is:

Very high rates of resistance have been observed in bacteria that cause common health-care associated and community-acquired infections (e.g. urinary tract infection, pneumonia).

The RFF, a nonprofit nonpartisan organization that conducts independent research-rooted primarily in economics and other social sciences-on environmental, energy, natural resources, and public health issues, reported some alarming numbers in their report "Finding The Cure" from 2007.

“In 1987, 2 percent of patients infected with S. aureus failed to respond to methicillin, an inexpensive antibiotic that had been effective against these infections since the 1960s. By 2004, more than 50 percent of patients with S. aureus failed to respond to methicillin, with terrible consequences.”

So now that we have your attention, lets take a look at the tables below, reporting bacterial resistance in hospitals and in the community.

Very alarming numbers wouldn't you say? Now, lets take a look at the next table which reports on bacteria mainly causing infections in the community.

AMR is a complex global public health challenge, and no single or simple strategy will suffice to fully contain the emergence and spread of infectious organisms that become resistant to the available antimicrobial drugs. You see, the development of AMR is a natural phenomenon in microorganisms and is accelerated by the misuse of antimicrobial agents in humans and animals.

Not only do we have AMR to worry about, but the lack of new antimicrobials on the horizon to replace those that become ineffective adds urgency to find a better drug.

The issue with antimicrobial resistance is nothing new, and neither is the potential colloidal silver has to be the solution to AMR and ABR.

If you have not read about colloidal silver uses you might want to click here. Let us explain something here, the way nanoparticles of silver work against microorganisms greatly reduces, and virtually eliminates the development of AMR and ABR. They might hold the answer to fight against this alarming threat.

Stay tuned, we will be discussing and posting a lot more about AMR and how colloidal nanoparticles of silver can help with this urgent threat.
